For those of us that call Lake Norman home, we know all about the beauty of the Historic Latta Plantation Nature Preserve. Since its beginning back in 1799, Latta Plantation has been everything from a working cotton plantation to a Boy Scout camp. There are many adventures to be explored at the 52 acres of Latta Plantation. Families visit to partake in a plethora of outdoor activities. These activities include horseback riding, hiking, biking, fishing, and boating. Latta Plantation is located in Huntersville making it a nice day trip from our Inn in Davidson.

House Tours at Latta Plantation
For an up close and personal look at the plantation, try one of their house tours. Staff members provide guided tours of the home Tuesday’s through Sundays’s. Self-guided tours of the grounds and the outbuildings are also an option. Because North Carolina is known as the Tar Heel state, be sure to ask about the Tar Heel Tour. This behind the scenes tour will show you the cooks kitchen, a reconstructed slave cabin, and also an intimate tour of the home. Reservations are required.
Latta Plantation Nature Center
The Nature Center at Latta Plantation is full of information about the land you’ll be exploring. The National Wildlife Federation certified Backyard Habitat Garden allows you to observe nature in action. You will find bird feeders, butterfly gardens, a pond teeming with life, and also a demonstration compost area. There is also a self-guided interpretative trail map so you can learn even more about the preserve.
Carolina Raptor Center
The Carolina Raptor Center is a rehabilitation center at Latta Plantation. They are devoted to helping conserve birds of prey. Birds of prey are most frequently injured and killed by vehicles. You will see more than 23 species of raptors along their ¾-mile trail. The center is open 7 days a week. Most noteworthy, they offer many events throughout the year that can be enjoyed free with paid admission.
Historic Latta Plantation Calendar of Events
Latta Plantation is a place that families can experience fun activities together. The calendar is packed with upcoming events. All Hallows Eve Family Fun Day and the Ghost Walk Haunted Trail are 2 events in October. In November, families are invited to attend the Folk Life Festival and the One Hundred Days of Christmas celebration. The Candlelight Christmas Event is another event that you won’t want to miss. The Plantation comes alive like never before with live entertainment, a live nativity, and refreshments.
