Grab a Picnic and Spend a Day at Lake Norman State Park

Lake Norman is known throughout the Carolinas as the Inland Sea for its epic coastline covering 520 miles, with a surface area of 32,510 acres. Davidson, North Carolina is one of the many towns that enjoys being along the shores of this picturesque man-made lake, with many locals and visitors alike spending days throughout the year at the enjoyable Lake Norman State Park. Located just 30 miles north of downtown Davidson in the town of Troutman, this recreation area is a great place for a myriad of outdoor activities from swimming and boating, to biking and tennis.

  • Swimming
    With 13 miles of shoreline along its own little corner of Lake Norman, there is a designated swimming area and sandy beach with a bathhouse and concession stand. There is a small fee for swimming, and lifeguards are on duty when the beach is open.
  • Boating
    Pedal boats and canoes are available for rent at the Lake Norman State Park. There is also a boat launch located within the park if you have your own watercrafts to take on out the water.
  • Picnicking
    This is an essential part of the park experience. With three areas around the park, guests can choose to be by the beach, along the cove, or near the entrance at one of these shelters equipped with tables and grills.
  • Fishing
    The fishing pier is a popular place to hang out most of the year. Anglers usually catch crappie, bluegill, yellow perch, and striped, largemouth and white bass. There is a smaller lake within the park that also has many coveted fishing spots perfect for the little ones to get a taste for the sport.
  • Hiking
    There are three trails that are throughout the park that make for lovely walks through the wooded area. Two of them are short, and the third doubles as a mountain bike trail, but the scenery is breathtaking nonetheless. This is a great place to take the little ones exploring, or just to get some exercise.
  • Biking
    Lake Norman State Park is far and away one of the best places in the area to do some mountain biking. The Itusi Trail stretches for 30.5 miles throughout the park, winding through old hardwood forests with peaks at the lake along the way. Both newly minted riders, as well as experienced mountain bikers, will enjoy this beautiful ride along Lake Norman.
  • Events
    Park rangers hold educational events regularly, which is a great way to learn about the area’s natural habitat.
