Davidson College Theatre Department: Where Creativity Takes Center Stage

Do you feel the thrill of anticipation when the curtain rises and the house lights dim with a spotlight on center stage? Davidson College Theatre Department produces performances that provide that sensation with each performance — where creativity meets center stage!

A Tradition of Excellence

Although Davidson is a small liberal arts college, the dedication of the faculty and staff is evident in the excellence in all areas of academics, sports, and the arts. Students are given opportunities to grow and excel in their majors and areas of interest. With a smaller enrollment, professors can interact more closely with students in and out of the classroom. The results are astounding.

Parents, we have a guide to help you and your student in their collegiate journey.

Theatre at Davidson

The department is “committed to creative and critical inquiry that reflects on, illuminates, and celebrates the diversity of the human experience.” This commitment applies to all students on campus, not just theatre majors. All students are encouraged to participate and explore the various opportunities offered within the department.

“I think the theatre is as essential to civilization as safe, pure water.”
—Vanessa Redgrave

The way the theatre department embraces all students regardless of their experience in the arts brings Vanessa Redgrave’s quote to life. Doors are open for all students to audition to perform on stage, assist the backstage team, work the lights and sound, direct, and more. The need to express one’s creativity is an essential part of life. It enhances and broadens one’s viewpoint as one explores interests and talents. It allows for freedom to express and grow personally and academically.

Broadway-Caliber Facilities

Cunningham Theatre Center

The Cunningham Theatre Center houses the Theatre Department. Renovated in 2008, it provides state-of-the-art spaces for students to learn and create. Many small colleges must re-use state sets and props due to budget and equipment restraints. However, the equipment and supplies are available to create stunning sets and backdrops for performances at Davidson.

Students receive practical experience designing and building sets. They hone their skills in carpentry, electrical, and rigging. The department uses the classrooms for auditions, rehearsals, and performances. Additional resources include a script library and a costume shop.

The Barber Theatre

With seating for 175, the Rupert T. Barber Theatre provides a more intimate and flexible experience. Audiences feel immersed in productions. Once again, students work with state-of-the-art modern tools to create various sets, brilliant lighting, and excellent sound. Learn more about the Rupert T. Barber Theatre scholarship.

Duke Family Performance Hall

For the two main stage performances, this 600-seat auditorium provides a Broadway-caliber experience for theatre productions and other major college events.
