The US National Whitewater Center is one of the Charlotte metro’s most famous attractions. Outdoor enthusiasts won’t want to miss a chance to explore the ancient forests of North Carolina. Sprawling across 1300 acres along the Catawba River, there are endless activities and adventures to be had regardless of what your interests are. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely hike or a thrilling ride down the river rapids, you can do both at this outdoor haven. Founded on the principles play, relax and learn, you are sure to find ample opportunities for all three at the US National Whitewater Center.

PLAY

Water activities offered include whitewater rafting, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding. An official Olympic Training Site for slalom kayakers, there are frequent sessions throughout the week and competitions all year long. If you’re looking for a more laid-back experience, the flatwater activities offer an easy ride on the river.

The canopy tours are an exceptional way to explore the forests along the Catawba. Offering both daytime and twilight trips, the US National Whitewater Center has incredible courses through the majestic North Carolina woods.

The Whitewater Race Series hosts a variety of events throughout the year, from 5k runs to trail races and SUP sprints. These are for the competitive at heart.

There are a variety of on-shore activities to enjoy, ranging from leisurely to hardcore. Explore the winding trails by foot or bike, or hit the ropes course suspended high above the river and through the trees. Rock wall climbing, repelling, and ziplines are other great options if you’re looking to stay dry.

RELAX

After a long day exploring the US National Whitewater Center, head to one of the excellent food and beverage establishments on site to unwind and refuel. The Pump House Biergarten offers a great craft beer selection, while the market has numerous grab-and-go options. River’s Edge Bar and Grill has a wide selection, from steaks and seafood to mouth-watering sandwiches, not to mention an excellent beer selection, all served up on a patio overlooking the river.

Adventure Dining is another great way to experience this beautiful oasis while keeping it leisurely and food-centered. Choose between their “Zipline and Dine” or “Paddle to Table” options, where you’ll enjoy an hour and a half of exhilarating recreation followed up with a delicious chef-curated meal.

Yoga is offered May thru September, all week long. For beginners, their Slow Flow sessions are the ideal starting point to master the basics and destress. For more experienced yogis, Open Level and Fun Flow are great options to challenge yourself and walk away feeling energized and renewed.

Thursdays thru Saturdays in the warmer months head out for River Jam, a concert series featuring both local and international performers. From bluegrass and folk to funk music, there’s sure to be a band that will catch your ear.

Festivals happen throughout the season with everything from a dazzling Fourth of July Celebration to a massive beer festival.

Educational adventures are popular for school-aged kids, with many elementary groups coming for environmental trips to learn in an exciting and interactive environment.

Corporate groups visit the Whitewater Center for team development days where they tackle challenges and strengthen their ties as coworkers and friends.
